As part of
its commitment to developing Egypt’s infrastructure, and
supporting the country’s key drivers of economic growth,
Siemens’ Transportation Systems participates actively in
upgrading the safety of Egypt’s railways.
At the
heart of any modern economy is a safe, reliable transportation
system that brings geographically distant locations within swift
and easy reach. Siemens serves Egypt’s rail network by supplying
state-of-the-art technology that allows passengers to enjoy the
benefits of secure rail travel.
Siemens is
a global leader in transportation systems, supplying a full
spectrum of products and services from interlocking systems and
operational control to traction power supplies, mass transit,
rolling stock, turnkey systems and after sales services. In
Egypt, the company has built a long-standing and prominent track
record, integrating all areas of rail competence to serve the
Egyptian National Railways (ENR) and other rail-based
transportation companies. The groups’ commitment to Egypt began
in 1958 with the delivery of the first Central Traffic Control
System (CTC), serving the stretch between Sohag and Assiout on
the main Cairo – Aswan line.
Since then, Siemens’ Rail Automation Systems have significantly
contributed to the safety of Egypt’s railway. The company has
equipped the ENR fleet of 700 trains and its main lines with its
Automatic Train Control system (ATC) that maintains optimum
speeds for all trains traveling on the network. In addition, the
company has undertaken the systematic upgrade of these ATC
devices with digital speed recorder systems (DEUTA) to meet the
transportation needs of Egypt’s citizens and enterprises.
The success
of Siemens technology in allowing a more efficient use of the
rail network is illustrated in the modernization of Baharia
line. To improve the safety of freight trains on this line,
Siemens supplied and maintained the first radio based signaling
system, and train operation system. These systems provided the
safety, surveillance and automatic operation of the freight
trains between the iron ore mines at the Baharia Oasis and the
steel factory in the Western Desert near Cairo, fully maintained
by local engineers.
Siemens
supplied the Alexandria Tram and Heliopolis Metro with power
supply rectifier stations and the overhead catenaries of the
tram network.
Siemens
Transportation Systems continues to be the leader in applying
its world-class solutions to upgrade continuously Egypt’s
expanding rail system.
