Siemens – raising the quality of life through the right infrastructures

History of our planet is revealing many interesting facts; one of these is constant change. People have always been very concerned about change. Therefore they were very creative in finding ways to anticipate, monitor and control it. Mankind has been always anxious about change and the unknown. However as science and technology have developed and advanced, people are also learning to adapt to change and to make the best use of technology to manage the changing environment. Over almost 160 years now Siemens has been supporting people's well-being and raising the quality of life within the constant change through provisioning of different kinds of infrastructures. Let’s explore some of them.

One of the current major and global trends is urbanization. Urbanization has a great impact on our life. Growing population which is distributed geographically and economically unevenly is placing many challenges on governments, industries and communities. In addition hereto, increasing scarcity of natural resources, regional shifts in economical gravity, ever increasing mobility of people, the growing demand for safety and security as well as pressing need for comprehensive healthcare and the need for greater environmental protection are putting additional strain. Fortunately that Siemens’ innovative solutions and services provide solutions for these challenges.

In Egypt the current increase in population demands the creation of more qualified job opportunities. As one of the responses hereto, the Egyptian government introduced an initiative to build 1000 factories with the target to create around 2 million new jobs. Siemens is participating in the construction, modernization and automation of factories and industrial plants throughout Egypt. Siemens also provides high quality electromechanical construction and infrastructures for the public and industrial sectors. This starts with electricity distribution and networks and ends with full automation of factories and plants. Urbanization leads also to the setup of new communities and cities. This in turn creates a huge construction demand for hospitals, education facilities and all kind of supportive infrastructure necessary to accommodate such new communities. In addition new industrial plants and communities require water (industrial and urban) as well as wastewater treatment plants. Pumping and filtering stations, water transmissions as water management are all areas where Siemens has a comprehensive portfolio. Thereby Siemens is playing a major role in the construction sector and is considered one of the most qualified electromechanical contractors in Egypt, being a partner for industries, municipalities as well as for the residential construction sector through its Automation and Industrial Solutions and Services.

Population growth and growth of our economy requires a corresponding and timely increase in power and electricity provisioning. Thereby urbanization has a substantial impact on power generation and distribution thereof. New fossil fired electricity generation plants are constructed according to the full range of environmental protection features emission and noise wise. When utilizing fossil energy resources, Siemens’ gas turbines are considered the most efficient in the world. The world as well as Egypt is also putting more emphasis on renewable and clean energy. Siemens has recognized this global trend and provides wind energy solutions. Another area is transmission of electricity. Examples hereto are conventional Air Insulated Switchgear substations being replaced by the innovative solution of the Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS). The GIS requires 25% less space than that occupied by conventional substations. This has resulted in a drop in the land costs which is considered to be an issue of great concern in the substations construction process. Thereby Siemens is providing Egypt with state of the art technologies for Power Generation, Transmission and Distribution.

Siemens has had a long standing history in providing proven technology for turnkey mass transit projects. Urbanization puts pressing demands on the transportation sector. Provisioning of technically and financially innovative transportation solutions for mass transit and light rail systems for efficient transport networks within and around megacities like Cairo or Alexandria as well as connecting new urban cities are areas where Siemens’ Transportation Systems is the right partner.

As population increases and possibilities of medical treatment advances, people ask for more comprehensive and accessible health care services. The Egyptian government has raised its efforts to secure medical care for all people and is planning the modification of the health insurance system. Introduction of Public Private Partnership programs is foreseen. The main aim is to raise the quality of medical services with the support of the private sector and to solve the medical deficiencies of the current system in Egypt. Siemens, being a leader in the field of Medical Solutions is participating by providing know-how, state-of-the-art products and systems.

Today Siemens’ role is more appreciated and recognized than ever since the challenges which we are facing demand for a strong player and reliable partner as Siemens to provide solutions and services which raise the quality of our life.
