Siemens Egypt’s Profile Awards Ceremony 2005
and Launch 2006 |
Aiming at promoting high standards of technical
writing, the Siemens Profile Awards is the only
pan-African journalism award devoted exclusively
to science and technology and serves as an
incentive to writers, broadcasters and producers
to create work that simplifies these often
complex subjects.
In a special ceremony held at the Four Seasons
Hotel on the 28th of March 2006, Siemens Egypt
honored the Egyptian winners for their
contribution in its Profile Awards contest for
the year 2005.
The Rising standards of science and
technology journalism in Egypt and the rest of
the African continent are helping to support
economic development, according to Siemens
Egypt’s’ President and Chief Executive Officer
Mohamed El-Mahdi.
“As an organization that has science and
technology at the very heart of everything we
do, we appreciate that our success lies in the
acceptance and adoption of new technologies on
the part of governments and private sector
across the continent,” he said. “And it is the
media that has the task of putting the message
out there that science and technology can make a
huge difference in improving the quality of life
of the continent’s people, create a safer and
healthier society and a prosperous
knowledge-driven economy for all Africa’s
people,” he added.
El-Mahdi said that the Siemens Profile Awards
was introduced to focus the media’s attention
towards the field of science and technology.
These subjects were often under-valued in Africa
– as in the rest of the world.
Hassan Amer, Judging Panel Member from Egypt
said: “The overall impression of the judges was
extremely positive and upbeat. They felt
encouraged that the overall standards of science
and technology journalism were rising
dramatically and there was a noticeable
improvement in the quality of entries for the
2005 Profile Awards.”
Some entries managed to bring technology to life
and reflected sound research and an ability to
unbundle often-complex technology for the man in
the street, according to the judging panel.
While the number of print entries was up this
year, the judges said there were a disappointing
number of television entries.
In recognition of the high quality entries, the
judges awarded category winner Haitham El-Dardeeri
from Al Mal newspaper for his entry in
Technology Policy and Investment.
Abeer Saady from Arabian Computer News with her
entry in Business Solutions and Hatem Shalaby
from Online Magazine for his entry in Mobile
Telecommunications Networks were granted merit
awards.
During the event, Siemens Egypt launched the
Profile Awards 2006. Application for the
competition will be open starting May 2006.
