Siemens has succeeded in rejuvenating a
factory in Nag Hammadi for The Aluminum Company
of Egypt over a period of 2 years during which
Siemens overhauled the workshop’s machinery.
Siemens’ modernization process was divided into
2 phases. The first phase was the evaluation
step for the machinery to estimate their
electrical and mechanical capabilities. The
second phase involved the redesigning of the
electrical aspects of the machines to make it
usable once again.
The workshop, originally valued at 100,000 EGP,
which was in jeopardy of shutting down due to
idle machinery is now worth 40 million EGP
performing at full capacity.
Dr. Hany Loka, Senior Vice President of Siemens
Limited Egypt and Head of Automation and Drives,
explained that the renovation process was done
through retrofitting of workshops machines using
latest servo motors and CNC (Computer based
numerical control) technologies.
Dr. Loka added that “the alternative of
substituting the old machinery was buying new
ones which would have cost over 80 million EGP,”
reassuring that modernization through digital
control guarantees flawless operation and
constant output.
Due to the recognition of the successful
activities of Siemens, The Aluminum Company of
Egypt recently awarded an order to Siemens for
modernization of the visualization system of the
Nitrogen plant.
“Net Profits after taxes generated by the
factory at this point in 2006 are 676 Million
EGP” said Eng. Sayed Abdel Wahab, Chairman & CEO
of The Aluminum Company of Egypt”. He added that
the following types of machines were involved in
the modernization process: drilling, boring,
turning, milling and Plano miller.
The Aluminum Company of Egypt is considered to
be the largest Aluminum producer in Egypt. The
actual production in 2006 was 247000 tons
representing around 95% of the total Egyptian
Aluminum market. The factory also exports its
output to several countries including the United
States, United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Spain,
Greece, Holland, Austria, Belgium, Malaysia,
Japan, and neighboring Arab countries.
The Siemens Automation and Drives Group (A&D),
Nuremberg, Germany, is the leading manufacturer
in this field worldwide. Products supplied by
A&D include standard products for the
manufacturing and process industries and for the
electrical installation industry as well as
system solutions, for example for machine tools,
and solutions for whole industries such as the
automation of entire automobile factories or
chemical plants. Supplementing this range of
products and services, A&D also offers software
for linking production and management
(horizontal and vertical IT integration) and for
optimizing production processes. A&D employs
70,600 people worldwide and in fiscal year 2006
(to September 30) earned a group profit of
€1.572 billion on sales of €12.848 billion and
