Profile Awards Background
• PA’s is a South African initiative that started 7 years ago
for the purpose of journalistic excellence.
• The primary objective of the Profile Awards is to develop,
nurture and advance quality science and technology reporting.
• PA’s is launched every year in January submit entries until
end of December of the same year. Journalists are allowed now to
submit as many entries as they wish in the category of their
choice. Categories last year were 10, and they were downsized to
only 8 categories. CSR participation remains very weak.
• Entries are accepted in Arabic, English, French and
Portuguese.
• The Profile Awards (PA’s) started in Egypt almost 4 years ago.
• The Profile Awards started in Egypt as a pilot program.
• The judging process in Egypt is conducted every year in
February where Mr. Kerry Swift comes to Egypt and confers with
two other Egyptian judges about all the entries submitted
excluding the French entries.
• In 2006 Egypt managed to collect around 32 entries for the
PA’s, a figure which Siemens CC in Egypt doubled by the end of
2007 (this year’s competition).
• Awards given to the journalists previously were R10,000 Rands
as well as a Siemens PC for the category winners. The overall
winner receives a monetary amount as well as a trip to South
Africa and Germany. Today the prize is increased to R15,000
Rands around EGP 10,500.
• A ceremony is held in Egypt annually after the journalists are
awarded in South Africa. The purpose is to have local
recognition for the journalists. Merit Awards winners are
awarded Siemens Gegasets from Siemens Egypt. A press release is
published to announce the winners in Al Ahram newspaper, the
most well renowned newspaper in Egypt.
• Siemens Egypt had category winners in 2007 in the fields of
Energy, IT and Transport. This year we have category winner in
Healthcare, Transport and Safety and Security and the overall
winner is Egyptian (Abeer Saady).
• In the ceremony in Egypt Siemens always allows other
journalists / invitees to give their suggestions on how to
improve the Profile Awards. Their suggestions are communicated
to Siemens CC in South Africa.
• Cooperation is effective between Siemens Egypt and South
Africa in a 2 way communication process. SA provides any
information needed and supplies promotional material for the
Awards. Siemens SA handles the necessary arrangements for the
trip to South Africa each year to make it a smooth process.
Siemens Egypt advises and communicates any changes about that
needs to be made to enhance the Profile Awards experience like
for instance the establishment of an online chat session for all
the African journalists which was suggested by the journalists
in PA’s ceremony in Egypt in 2006. |
